Herbie

Hello! My name is Jeremy and I am a foster with PEARL Parrots. I began about a year and a half ago with 2 conures, Pineapple and Pistachio. It was my first real foray into parrots besides my budgies Bud and Lou. Pineapple and Pistachio were a great learning experience and it so rewarding when they were adopted. It was also hard to see them go.

Pineapple and Pistachio

After Pineapple and Pistachio were adopted we started talking with Deneen the PEARL foster coordinator about what we could foster next. We were thinking about another couple conures but Deneen suggested a Blue Faced Amazon named Herbie that had been in the program for a couple years and had bounced between a few foster homes. I was a little hesitant about an amazon, I had read all kinds of stories about the difficulties and noise they can create. Those hesitations dissolved away the minute we met Herbie. Herbie had had a hard life and came to PEARL mostly plucked.

We met Herbie at Deneen's and spent a few days getting to know him before we brought him back to my house. It was love at first sight. My whole family quickly fell for this bird in a huge way despite his shortcomings of which he has a few. He isn't cuddly for one. He can be moody too. He is afraid of EVERYTHING. He talks in some weird voice or beeps loudly when he is upset. He doesn't really know how to play with toys or forage. But he loves getting his head scratched through the bars which slowly evolved into letting us scratch him outside the cage. He has been with us for only 3 month now but has been making a lot of progress. He still has his issues and might always have a few. But he is ours and we love him.
